Kitten Rescue Group Advice When Finding Kittens

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU FIND KITTENS

Bitten By A KittenThe most important thing you can do once you hear kittens mewing, is to wait no more than a 1/2 hour before you take action. If you think mama cat will be coming back, snake an extension cord to where the babies are and bring them a cardboard box. Put a heating pad under some cloths so they can’t access it directly. Don’t worry, if mama is ok, she will come back and love having the box for her kittens (cats and boxes, right?).

The main thing is to keep the kittens warm no matter what. Feeding is not as important as warmth for these babies as they are born without the ability to make their own body heat. If they are crying so you can hear them, they are already in distress. I can’t stress this enough. They are already cold and hungry—kittens that are tended to by a mama don’t make a sound. So they most probably have already been without mama for at least an hour or two. Don’t listen to advice to leave them there for hours—they will die without your intervention.

If you find kittens anywhere in the Bay Area, bring them inside and keep those babies warm with a heating pad on low wrapped in a thin blanket or towel or T-shirt. Unless you are going to try to take care of them yourself or if by chance you’ve done this before, don’t try to feed them yet.

You can email me, Anje ([email protected]), any time (I hear the ding on my phone), and we will arrange to get me the kittens and I promise to keep you updated about their progress. A pic of the kittens would be great, so I can assess their age and condition.

ABOUT BITTEN BY A KITTEN

BITTEN BY A KITTEN RESCUE is a 501c3 tax-exempt orphan kitten rescue in the San Francisco East Bay Area. We rescue bottle baby and orphan kittens from the community and kittens that would otherwise be put to sleep in area shelters. We take kittens from private homes only if we can make sure that if there is a mama cat, she gets spayed. We raise our kittens underfoot and treat them with love and attention to become affectionate, well-adjusted house cats with no bad habits.

BITTEN BY A KITTEN RESCUE kittens are always spayed or neutered so that they will never contribute to the horrendous overpopulation of cats and kittens in this country. Our kittens are up –to-date on vaccinations, treated for fleas with Advantage or Revolution, wormed with pyrantel or Drontal, and vet-checked as healthy, then are microchipped. One of the kittens in the litter has tested negative for FIV/FeLV.
